Welcome travelor. Welcome to the world of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. You may at first look at this game and think it is nothing more than an FPS, and why not? It resembles that at first as the view of the graphics and such could fool even the most jaded fan into thinking this is Hexen or Heretic, but once you look deeper, you just might find something there that you weren't expecting. This game bleeds AD&D, and is considered by many AD&D fans to be the best AD&D video game of it's time. Many fans have actually bought the 3DO systwm just to play it and see if the game is as good as the fans prod at. My question to you is this, if the AD&D fans are getting 3DO systems just to play this gwm, then why not be the 3DO fan that already owns the system and get the game because it is good?
The basics; the game is a 3D dungeon crawler, and a very well put together one at that. Several of the monsters from the mythology of the Dungeons and Dragons RPG are here to come after you. Everything from Goblins to Orcs, to strabge Mushroom Men and the Undead will hunt you down in the dungeons of Slayer to keep you from profitting and surviving the game. Roll your character well and play that character the way that you would a real D&D campaign and you will prosper well in the game. Otherwise, it's not a cake walk. Slayer is easily one of the harder games of it's kind for any system, even the mighty 3DO. Expect some serious upset if you are just looking to screw around with this one as that really isn't what the D&D games are about, and it is apparent with this one as well as the AI and dificulty can be quite brutal. Don't believe me? Just check the extremely HUGE instruction book. Believe me though when I tell you that the book will come in handy, especially when you are ready to start handling magic.
The graphics here are very well done, and in my opinion, some of the finest examples of what the 3DO can deliver in this kind of environment. I love the look of everything that comes onto the screen. The characters may seem at times to have low animation frames, but they work well for what they are, and lets face it, at least the game doesn't look like DOOM does on the 3DO. Either way, the amount of details to the characters and ethe levels are very nice, and when you run the game in it's high graphics mode, what you lose in frame rate speed you gain in some truely nice graphical effects, not much in drop off, and some spectacular light sourcing.
Sounds are crisp and clear as well as some well done music. This game uses what the 3DO can do with audio quite nicely and really shows you a glimpse of what Trip Hawkins and crew had in mind for what the future of gaming would have been like had the 3DO been used to it's full potential.
The controls work well here, but this is the one place that I wish things had been done just a little differently. I like that the controls do what they are supposed to do, but I just wish that they were a little tighter. Still, for what you have, the controls are nice and they work well, just a little better would have been perfect.
All in all, AD&D Slayer is a bang worth the buck. If you can find the game in complete condition, I highly recommend it as it really is a well made game for a great system. Seriously, if you are a AD&D fan though, where the Hell are you and why don't you already own this? This game rocks!

Well, give it a shot and let me know what you think. If you enjoy Towers II for the Jaguar, you should love this game for sure.
