I first posted a review of this game on the 3DO Zero forum almost a year & a 1/2 ago. Thought I'd revisit it and see if the passage of time had changed my thinking any.
When you think of the best basketball games of the mid-90’s, what comes to mind? For the arcade b-baller maybe ‘NBA Jam’. For the sim player, perhaps the ‘Live’ games. But for the gamer that wanted the best of both worlds, 3DO’s very own Slam’n Jam was the basketball game to own!
This game not only easily held its own against the premier basketball games of that period, but surpassed them in most ways, including graphics & playability! This was one of the last 3DO releases from Crystal Dynamics, and it shows the level of comfort they had achieved w/the 3DO platform. In fact, unlike most sport games, this one does not seem dated to me (despite the big 95 slapped on the title). I gave it a spin recently to see if it still held up to my memories … it does.
To get comparisons out of the way, yes it is very much in the mold of ‘Run ‘n Gun’, a great arcade game back when arcades were still popular. Others tried to bring this arcade experience to a home console (If I remember correctly it was the SNES w/the game ‘Give ‘n Go’) but it would take a console like 3DO to do this type of game justice. Helped me to save a lot of quarters (which I guess I ended up spending on more 3DO games )
Everything about this game is polished. It has great graphics, including large characters w/very good facial expressions, and even a great crowd! The sound too is awesome, w/running color commentary from Van Earl Wright! And control wise, this is one of the best games to ever grace the 3DO. Everything just clicks.
One change to note from when I first reviewed this game is the challenge. Originally I said the “AI is very solid”. Having done a season recently, I now think the game is a bit easy. Not a bad thing mind you, because the challenge level can be increased. Also, two-player games are always more fun than against the computer anyway.
Most 3DO players should already have this game. If you don’t, why? Maybe your not into sports games? Maybe ‘Jammit’ turned you off to 3DO b-ball? Maybe you are a sim junkie? No excuses. Grab this game today (it isn’t that rare and is cheap enough) You’ll have a blast!

Nice review man. I actually enjoy this game also. I can say though that it is too bad that 3DO never got NBA Jam TE. I am not a huge sports game fan and not really into basketball, but I did enjoy this game. Sweet, like candy! |
