Star Fighter is one of many 3D polygon shooters to be released on the 3DO, is it a good game? To some degree yes and to some degree no. The game itself has many novel approaches that hadn't really been seen in contemporary games of the same genre, one example was the ability to fly in and out of the atmosphere at any given time, it adds some sense of exploration to an overall linear game. By linear I mean the missions, it's the typical space shooter fair as your commanded to destroy strategic points and key targets while not getting blown up yourself. While this is a tried and true formula it could have faired better and been alittle more original. One of my main gripes about this game is the controls.. you find another game with such frustrating controls. Typically pressing left or right on the D-Pad would make the craft veer to the respective direction but not in this game instead you do barrel rolls which are a visually nice touch and add some excitement they do not add to the fun factor when your being hounded by an enemy craft and cannot veer away from their shots. Graphically the game is very nicely texture mapped but you do have smeared textures on the ground and shearing found in older generation 3D games of the time. One of the less then steller aspects of the game is when you shoot the ground it turns into a burned out square, this would have been nicer if it blended into the still intact segments of terrain. Next we go onto the sound. This game features some nice music which does not annoy after extended play and the sound effects are crisp and compliment the game like they should.
Overall I would say that Star Fighter is a nice addition to your 3DO collection but it could have been a much better game if the controls would have been finer tuned.
Graphics: 7 Nice texture mapping and overall design of the 3D models present in the game, though it does suffer from some pixelation and shearing here and there.
Control: 4 Simply atrocious.. the barrel rolls should have been assigned to the shoulder buttons instead of scrapping any form of veering.
Sound: 7 Nice tunes and sound, nothing spectacular but never bores or annoys
Fun Factor: 6 It's a nice game, looks good but getting use to the lack of control when in serious situations really makes this game less then it could have been. |

I think the music in this game really helps to set it apart from the other space shooters on 3DO. No heavy rock to be found here, in fact some tracks are almost ... dare I say, relaxing.
Anyway, I tend to agree. A good game, but a few ticks short of greatness. |
