'You may have noticed that in my earlier review of 'Crime Patrol', I made multiple jabs at ALG’s freshman effort Mad Dog McCree. For the record, my dislike is directed solely at the 3DO port, and not the original arcade game. The 3DO version is a sloppy mess, that only serves to feed the flames of 3DO hater’s.
Last year I posted a review on 3DOZero, to warn any potential buyer’s to run from this game like a padawan learner would run from a crazed Anikan Skywalker! Sadly, it seems that for the majority, my words fell on deaf ears. There is even an administrator over there who is a fan of the game (for the sake of his privacy I will call him 3DO lad ) I blame myself for this. Obviously me review was not clear. So, I present to the members of the 3DO Maniac forums, my re-write, director’s cut review of Mad Dog McCree.
To start, please take this brief quiz …
Question 1 – Do you enjoy graphics that are so grainy you have to squint to make out the enemies?
Question 2 – Do you like a game that registers your shots as only suggestions?
Question 3 –Are you infatuated with long load times, and consider the more the merrier?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, than Mad Dog may be the game for you (if you answered yes to all 3, are you a former ALG employee? )
Mad Dog 3DO represents the absolute worst of these problems! The graphics are very inconsistent, and present multiple opportunities for you to squint at the screen in loss as Mad Dog’s cronies fill your hide with lead. Those who you do manage to see will often stand invincible as your shots that hit them square in the head with no effect (bullet proof cowboy hat, of course!) Frustration will no doubt make you want to throw your 3DO in the trash compactor, but don’t worry … the ridiculous load times will afford you plenty of opportunity to catch your breath and regain your calm. Oh, and to clarify these aren’t just load times between scenes, but also between enemies. I’ll illustrate …
Shoot a bad guy …..
Load …
Load …
Load …
Shoot a bad … nah I’m just kidding, still loading.
Don’t believe me, go try it out. You’ll have time to shoot someone, and come back and finish reading this review before the next one appears.
Thank goodness for ALG and 3DO fans everywhere that these problems vanished in subsequent releases! A round of Mad Dog II, Space Pirates, and Who shot Johnny Rock are almost enough to make you forget about this awful game … almost. If you have the Gunslinger collection, you might as well keep this game just to make fun of it. But in no way should you consider purchasing this game on it’s own, unless it is a gift for your mortal enemy.
lol, nice review trev.
i can't remember which gun game i played in London at the 3do launch. must've been this i guess but it was a big reason for me buying the console. i was there thinking, shit, i may be able to play those arcade gun games i like in my own house!
but no, trip and his croonies had to go and fuck me over over and not release the gamegun in britain.
finally some of the pain is releaved. :)
nah, i wouldn't bother buying any if i couldn't use the gun. i've played gun games using a mouse before and it's just like cheating really. who know...one day....maybe...
