Although I do like them, I was never huge into fps games. I love Wolfenstein on 3DO, & Goldeneye is still great on the N64 but other than them, very few fps games were memorable for me. I could never get into Halo, and although the Metroid Prime series is outstanding, I don't really consider them fps ... more like first person adventure/platformer
Anyway , 3 series that I always thought looked cool but never really spent much time with ...
Duke Nukem, Half-Life & Unreal
What have I been missing? Pros/Cons? Which is the best & why? |

Duke nukem and unreal were good in their time, not so great now. The gameplay is dated and mostly revolves around finding keys to open areas, similar to Doom. Not really worth bothering with now. (try dark forces 1 or 2 (much better).
Half Life was one of the first to break away from this mould, the quests and tasks were integrated into the storyline, instead of just finding blue key to open blue door and shooting some things in between. A true breakthrough in FPS games (although i would also consider this to be a action/adventure/shooter hybrid, not a FPS).
Some of my favourites are,
Half life 2, even better than the original.
Medal of honor (allied assault, PC), the same team (mostly) that went on to become infinity ward and produced the fantastic Call Of Duty series.
The call of duty series on the PC (1,2 & 4) the atmosphere and tension in these games is yet to be rivaled in any other game, although they tend to be a bit on the short side. |

I had forgotten about Dark Forces & Medal of Honor ... I played the original Dark Forces and kinda enjoyed it ... Medal of Honor was all right ... I'm sick of the whole World War scenarios frankly, and I think they have been way over used. I hope it dies out soon for some fresher stories ...
I never did play many fps in the ps2/xbox/gamecube eras ... Red Faction is the only one that somes to mind at the moment. I guess I'm into the older school type ones ...
I do remember a game called Disruptor that was first in development for 3DO & later M2 ... it got canned and was released for the psx instead ...it looked pretty cool but I never did pick up a copy. |

| Disruptor for the PSX! One of my favorite Console FPS games. The sound engineer was a genius, the music tracks consisted of 2-3 tracks that were cued depending on the situation, like kicking serious ass or getting fired on kicked in the intense mix of the track and when you were not in danger it would go back to the mellower part. one of my favorite aspects of that game. |
