Yes, I know that I said earlier that Hawkins killed the 3DO, and in a way he did. When it was sold to Matsushita along with the rights to the M2, 3DO as a system developer died and became a software developer that some would argue, were less than perfect. Truthfully speaking from the grind though, the 3DO did some things that never were done before; it survived a substantial amount of time without carts in a market that was made up of Cart powerhouses. Hawkins knew that CD was the future of game media, and unlike NEC, Sega, and Amiga, he really brought the medium out at the right time. 3DO might actually be around still if not for one thing; Price. I know alot of you know this, and hopefully new people will stumble onto this site and learn a few things about the system that was the 3DO. Ahead of it's time, too expensive, but ingenious otherwise.

Yep. I remember looking at the 3DO at Sears and being so impressed by it. Of course, the $700 price tag was definitely going to make sure that my parents weren't going to buy it for me. And, of course, at that price I didn't even ask them for it.
What did Trip get right, and who copies his vision today, is the questions we should be asking.
(some of these I'm not sure on btw, so correct me if I'm wrong!)
3DO Original - 3DO was to be a Multimedia device. Movies, audio and pictures.
Copies - Sega Saturn, PS2, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii.
3DO Original - A family console: Party games and casual games.
Copies - Playstation, PS2, Wii.
3DO Original - Cheap to develope for and low licensing costs compared to the alternatives (at the time nintendo and Sega)
Copies - Wii, the original Playstation tried this too.
3DO Original - innovative controller. Headphone socket, 8 player with no multi-tap.
Copies - None - because they are all stupid. Headphone socket in the controller - genius.
3DO Original - had the foresight (but not the hardware) to recognise 3D was all important in a home console.
Copies - the lot of them.
3DO original? - External add-on memory card
Copies - the lot of them.
3DO was the most successful none Japanese console in Japan when compared to the 360, the Jag, the Xbox, all of which failed dismally, 3DO failed too but it shone for a few moments longer than the others.
Loads of stuff the 3DO did first - Trip was aces. I wish he was my dad. (maybe he is ;) )
Could you not get a FMV addon thing for the Saturn? To make it play VCDs? I think you could. It could play audio CDs and I think you could play CD+Gs on it too. And with a software add-on, the Saturn could play Kodak CD picture thingy. Just like the 3DO.
The saturn also had great big lumps of JVC stuff in it. Like the CD player. JVC, Panasonic, Matsushita all being basically the same company.
Also, while I'm thinking, was the 3DO the first games console to have analogue controller support? With the flight stick pro? Maybe it was!
