So, are there any other adventure game fans on here besides me?
I'm a huge fan of LucasArts adventure games (the only one I haven't beaten yet is The Dig, but I'm rectifying the situation right now), but sadly they don't make adventure games anymore.
Luckily, Telltale Games has taken up the slack. Telltale Games was founded by a lot of the members of the team who made the cancelled LucasArts sequel to Sam & Max Hit the Road called Sam & Max: Freelance Police.
Their first game was a Texas Hold'em Poker game that was a test for their adventure game engine. I haven't ever tried this one, as I'm not the biggest fan of Poker (though I've played it whenever a challenge came up on Pogo, though I'm no longer a Club Pogo member anymore, but getting back on track...). But, their first game using the engine that was an adventure game I did buy.
Bone: Out from Boneville was a small adventure game based on Jeff Smith's comic of the same name. It was a nice little game, and it showed a lot of promise for the future games, but it lacked the overall LucasArts-feel. The director's cut release that came later fixed some of this, as it expanded upon the story and replaced some of the character models and voices with the improved ones from the second Bone game.
Bone: The Great Cow Race expanded on the first game greatly, as it now felt like a LucasArts game, with detailed locations, plenty of people to talk to, and even a few injokes that eluded back to the early LucasArts games. This is the last Bone game, which is a shame as I would have loved to have seen them do all the books. They are tied up with rights complications right now, and seeing as there is a Bone movie coming out by a big name studio, I doubt that Telltale will be able to make more. :(
Then, there's Sam & Max Season One. The rights to the Sam & Max characters expired at LucasArts, and reverted back to their creator, Steve Purcell. Steve worked out a deal with Telltale so they could create games based on Sam & Max, and Telltale Games came full circle. They weren't able to finish Sam & Max: Freelance Police, as that remained the property of LucasArts, but the general idea was reborn as Sam & Max: Season One. Sam & Max: Freelance Police was going to be a commercial boxed game that had Sam & Max working on several little cases that led up to a final large case that reconciled the plot. This is what Sam & Max Season One did, except instead of a boxed release we got individual episodes released over a season (like TV! I love that). The stories and puzzles got better as they went on, and by the time the sixth and final episode came out I felt like the games actually beat Hit the Road as my favorite Sam & Max game, which wasn't a small feat since I loved Hit the Road. The game finally did come as a boxed version after the season was over, and it was loaded with stuff! Keeping with the TV show vibe, it came on a DVD that could be put into your DVD player where they had developer and composer commentary on the episodes, trailers for each of the episodes (including the 2006 E3 trailer), concept art, and my favorite of the lot: bloopers. This consisted of both Pixar style bloopers where the characters would do things such as bumping into boom-mics that came into view (hey, Steve Purcell works at Pixar! I wonder if this was a nod towards his current employer), and animation set to the voice actors flubbing their lines. The latter is the best, with Sam breaking into the voice of Fone Bone when reading a line for a Bone reference in the Situation Comedy episode, and the voice of Max cracking his voice at trying to keep in the high range of Max. It's really funny to see Max occasionally speaking with a low pitched voice. It's clear that the folks at Telltale are having fun doing what they do.
CSI: Three Dimensions of Murder is also a fun game, especially the second case which pokes fun at LucasArts and their cancellation of Sam & Max: Freelance Police. I own this game, but I haven't yet finished it. There is a second CSI game by Telltale called Hard Evidence, but I haven't played this one at all, since I want to finish Three Dimensions of Murder first.
Their newest game is Sam & Max Season Two. There are only five episodes this season as compared to last season's six, but the episodes are tighter and flow better into each episode leading up the the finale. They only have one more left to release, which they will be doing in April, but I have a long way to catch up. I only completed episode one: Ice Station Santa. I'm playing episode two: Maui Better Blues now, but I'm not very far into it. From what I've played so far though, Sam & Max doesn't look like it will jump the shark any time soon. The quality I've seen so far is easily on par with the best of the Season One episodes. |

If the games weren't PC centric, i'd love to check them out. _________________ www.vgtheory.com |

They have a few games on other systems than the PC: Three Dimensions of Murder is available for the PlayStation 2, and Hard Evidence is available for the Xbox 360 and Wii and Out from Boneville is available for the Mac.
They are also working on a new series of episodic games for WiiWare and also (not quite confirmed, but hinted at heavily) Sam & Max Season One for the Wii. |

I have to thank you Metafox for mentioning the 2 CSI games, I found another one called CSI Miami not sure if exactly the same genre. I got all 3 for my sister who is mad keen on CSI and these crime solving games - I brought her Dark Motives and the One before whose title eludes me for the moment which she has finished and thoroughly enjoyed as stress relievers.
I now have her Easter present sorted! Many thanks once again!

I am a huge adventure game fan (just downloaded episode 4 of Sam & Max). Been playing them since the early type in adventures on the Spectrum and Amstrad CPC.
I currently have about 200 on the PC alone, shame there weren't more made on the 3do.
CSI currently has 5 episodes for the PC and other formats.
Lucasarts were the best in the field by far (Sierra were way overated, LSL was probably the best series), there were many other quality games made, check out the reviews at just adventure. (should check out Discworld 1 & 2 very good, too many others to list here though)
The dig is one of the easiest games they made so you should get through it pretty quick (i can play through it now in one sitting, finished it so many times ). |

Discworld is awesome. Love those games. Too bad we will probably not see anymore, at least not at the quality level of those games. |

I'm waiting for the ScummVM engine reimplementation to play Discworld and Discworld II. Terry Pratchett and his agent Colin Smythe have approved the source release and future freeware re-issuing of the game.
It might take quite some time though, since ScummVM has not yet recieved the sourcecode, and have been waiting since 2005. They are now reverse-engineering the engine, like they did with the LucasArts SCUMM games.
I'm patient though, and I can wait.

I definitely agree. I like most adventure games I've played, but most of the games that I love are by LucasArts or by former LucasArts employees who left the company to make adventure games in the same style.

There were a few Sierra games that I enjoyed. I thought the Space Quest games were funny, though I only completed the first and second ones. The third King's Quest game was a lot of fun too, but I never completed that one either. There's actually a Sierra game that is in the games that I love that I mentioned above, and that is Freddy Pharcus: Frontier Pharmacist. The humor was top-notch, and it was brimming to the top with in-jokes.

You're welcome. I'm only too happy to help a fellow adventure game fan. I think she'll enjoy the Telltale CSI games. I am only an occasional viewer of CSI, and I found Three Dimensions of Murder to be quite engrossing. |

I wish i had known about the Discworld games earlier, i have just paid 40 pound for these on Ebay, they will de-value big time when they get released as Freeware.
My statement about sierra may have been a bit harsh, i just didn't like all the dead ends and timed sequences, especially in the later games which were very large compared to the earlier ones (KQ5 & 6) Freddy Pharkas is a great game, you should also check out the Gabriel Knight trilogy. |

Well, there's always the bonus of having a nice box and physical disks to admire.
There was a message posted on the scummvm boards just yesterday that stated that they need permission from all of the developers of the game to get the source release. The amazing thing though is that they only need to get hold of one more developer. Though, the way it's going that may be a long time coming.

No, you were pretty spot on about Sierra for the most part. It did seem like they would milk their series dry after a while, and I'm not a fan of dying in adventure games unless it's a death where you do something stupid (like in Broken Sword or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis). I absolutely hate timed puzzles and mazes too (which is why quite a few early LucasArts games don't top my favorites list).
But there are some diamonds in the rough, though the same could be said for just about any company producing adventure games. LucasArts is indeed the only company where I can say I enjoyed all of their adventure games I've played, even if some aren't among my favorites.
I played some of The Beast Within and enjoyed what I played of it a lot. I've been meaning to try Sins of the Fathers, but I haven't gotten to it yet. |

| Devalued? If you are collecting videogames because they are worth money, you are in the wrong field sir. Buy stocks, it's safer. The bottom will fall out. I've seen it several times over; Comic Books, Baseball Cards, Beanie Bables, Magic Cards, Pokemon, the list goes on and on for the fads. Videogames is a fad right now, but keep an eye out, it will fall as a cash cow collectible. |

I don't really collect them for their value, its just sometimes you have to pay a bit more (in some cases more than they are worth) to get a hold of obsolete games. Monkey Island 1&2 & Indy 4 cost me about 30 quid each.
If i downloaded them off the torrent sites everyone complains but the companies won't release them again so what can you do ?
Comic books are still doing alright, just seen Spiderman No 3 go for over $3000. |

I paid a good deal for Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis too. I had bought it as part of the LucasArts Archives collection, but I love the Adventurer magazine that LucasArts used to put out, so I bought the FoA big box to get it.
I'm not too much of a collector anymore, I'm mostly just a gamer now - but I really do love the LucasArts adventures enough to collect for them. Just as I'm doing with the Telltale releases now. |

The original Dune has elements of strategy involved, so i wouldn't say it was a true adventure game, pretty good all the same, although it will be quite difficult to get hold of now. Haven't seen it on ebay for a long time in the UK.
Will have to get back into loom myself, could never get hooked on it for some reason.
Just finished Monkey Island 2 and Beneath A Steel Sky, without using a walkthrough (amazingly, for the first time!), MI2's ending was tough and rather disappointing. |
