Are we sure that Charlotte was testing Daniel's ability to remember the three cards? Could they have been testing some other ability? We already have it that Miles has something going on. Why can't Daniel? Perhaps some sort of psychic/empathic thing?

I assumed he hadn't already seen the cards and was trying to remote view them, although I suppose telepathy would make sense too. I guess it speaks to the nature of the show when we automatically jump to the least obvious explanation Wink

I assumed that his level of genius is so incredibly high that he is constantly distracted, and simple tasks like remembering three playing cards are impossible for him.  It's been implied already that he's mentally ill, through Naomi's description of him, and the fact that he cries at the news reports about the finding of the supposed flight 815.

At first, I was thinking along the lines that Daniel was experiencing time in "reverse" (or "backwards" ala Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass"), as the explanation for both Daniel's intro (crying from watching 815 crash news story) & the 3-card Monty experiment.

But after reading tigerlilylynn's post (and applying Occam's Razor), I think "antegrade amnesia" is a much more likely explanation ...

Daniel may suffer from antegrade amnesia (trouble forming new memories). This would explain not understanding why he was crying and the frustration over the card task.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a new therapy being tested in a number of neurology studies to stimulate parts of the brain that are functioning below normal, expected levels.

From an article in the Times last Spring:
"Experiments on mice have suggested that coils generating magnetic fields can strengthen brain circuits in ways that enhance learning and the animals’ ability to remember."

This may be our yet unknown reason for why Daniel was desperate to get on the island. The Electromagnetic potential of the island may be the boost he needs to get though this absent minded professor phase. This would also explain the expectation of progress at the card task and why he might have a caregiver rather than a spouse in Confirmed Dead.

For the sake of the story this may only apply at the short-term memory level which would allow him to get names and mission objectives but forget the eggs are on the stove.
