So, I just saw the clearest literary influence I have ever seen. This post contains giant spoilers for Lost: Via Domus (the newly released PC and console game), so don't read on if you haven't played it, and is planning on doing so. Don't read this post if you haven't read Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" series, and is planning to do so.
Now, as all who've read The Dark Tower knows, the last book in the opus ends with the protagonist, Roland, finally reaching the tower the series is named after. A tower he's been trying to reach ever since he was a child.
He climbs the tower, one step at a time, and he continually sees things from his past as he climbs it. When he reaches the final step, he opens the door at the top. Steps through.
And finds himself at the start of his quest (well, not quite at the start, but at the start of book 1 in the series). For a second he knows that he has done this more times than he can fathom, but then he loses the memory of all the other times he's done it, and starts all over.
Only this time, he has a horn he's lost many years before, giving the readers hope for his quest.
Now, Via Domus ends on a similar note.
The game ends with Elliot, the protagonist, reaching a boat. When he reaches the boat, he is greeted by Locke, who kills an other, that tries to keep our protagonist from leaving the island. Our protagonist goes on the boat (called Via Domus), and goes off towards the sunset.
When, suddenly, he hears a mayday on his radio. At the same time, he hears a roaring from above, and looks up to see a plane. It's Oceanic flight 815! He watches in terror as the plane rips apart and crashes into the island. Suddenly, he wakes up, and hears someone call his name. It's Lisa - the girl he saw get killed just hours before he got on the plane! As she races towards him, she smiles as she tells him that she's so happy, because they both survivced the crash.
BOOM! and the word Lost flashes on the screen. Game over.
Now, this is apparently the ending that Cuse and Lindeloff suggested.
Just a fun fact I thought I'd throw out there _________________ Blame any typos, misunderstandings of the basic English language or weird humor on my Danishness. |
