This question popped into my brain while responding to a post on here... it's also my first poll, so here's hoping it comes out okay!
Also, I've only put in people who might remotely be reasonable. Sorry, no Kate-on-the-run or wheelchair-bound Locke! (That sounds like the makings of a very bad XXX movie.... Well, the Locke part. The Kate part no. But hey.) _________________ "So we saved the world together for a while, and that was lovely." --Desmond
Shouldn't the date be 2000 or 2001. Des was missing for three years (on island) and was in training for a while so it maybe 2000. _________________ Mark B.

Here's a reposting of some quick math I did on the "The Constant">Cause/Effect thread:
So I'd propose this timeline (though it could have errors, 'cause it's late!): Desmond the monk is pre-1996. He meets Penny, and the big breakup is 1996. He joins the Army, and is in it for four years (the jail time perhaps doesn't effect his overal service time... that's assuming the Brits do four year chunks as us Yanks do). 2000 he gets out of the army, gets the money offer from Mr. Widmore to stay away from Penny. Desmond swears to prove his worth, etc, and by 2001 gets Libby's boat--around that time is when Penny makes contanct in the arena where Jack is running. He sails, crashes, pushes the button for three years, until 2004. He doesn't push the button, 815 crashes, and here we are.
Lostpedia also confirms flashbacks from "The Constant" to be 1996; check http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/The_Constant for more! _________________ "So we saved the world together for a while, and that was lovely." --Desmond

I agree The Constant is in 1996 but I disagree about Penny being engaged at that time. I don't think she has a finance in 1996, she is still getting over Des.
Her engagement would have come sometime after the break-up and before Des met her at the stadium. So between 1996 and 2000/2001. Given what we know about the Penny-Des relationship I'm thinking it took her some time to get over Des and she wouldn't be engaged to someone less than a year after they split up. Furthermore she'd probably not be engaged that long, it's not like she needed to save to pay for the wedding, honeymoon etc.
I got the feeling that Des had not been in the army that long and so it was not long after the break-up.
I have not re-watched the scene in great detail so I did not notice if Penny was wearing a ring. _________________ Mark B.

This is the damndest thing... I distinctly remember Mr. Widmore telling Des in the bathroom that Penny was engaged. But I just rewatched it, and he doesn't say that. And you're right, she isn't wearing an engagement ring (she has something on the ring finger of her right hand, but that doesn't count).
Mark, I concede the point sir! My question is folly!! _________________ "So we saved the world together for a while, and that was lovely." --Desmond
