We saw the Other's brainwashing movie, when Sawyer and Kate rescued Karl in the Episode 'Not In Portland.'
It was very Clockwork Orange and psychedelic, but did not seem to be too brainwash-y (not that I am an expert on brain washing).
Could this be the way that Others get around the need for a Constant while getting on and off the island?
I cannot picture Ben having a Penelope waiting for him to fixate on, he has troubles with relationships. |

It's possible, keep in mind a 'constant' doesn't necessarily have to be a person; rather something tangible in both timelines. _________________ "I dust a bit...in addition, I am at the moment writing a lengthy indictment against our century. IMHO, I don't think the Clockwork Orange video is used as a replacement for the constant when the Others travelled to/from the Island ...
Ben told Alex (in an earlier S4 ep, I think) that he was brainwashing Carl to prevent her from getting pregnant.
Also, why drug Juliet when coming to the Island? I gotta believe that they knocked her unconscious to prevent any "side-effectd" from occurring on her trip to the Island.
Ben's constant may be the doll Annie gave him or maybe even Annie herself (if she is still alive). _________________ "Destiny is a fickle bitch!" - Benjamin Linus |

A person as a constant is pretty dodgy really but so far that's all we have seen as working.
Penny for Des and Des for Faraday.
I mean Penny could have died in an accident/got sick and died been out when Des called or just not listened to him and moved/changed her number (in fact UK phone numbers did change from 1996 to 2004).
If it can be anything why did the photo of Des and Penny not work or the book by Dickens that Des is to read before he dies ? _________________ Mark B.

Good point Mark B...I don't recall the exact dialogue, but I do remember Des asking Daniel if a person could be a constant, making me think it could be something other than a person. Perhaps it has to be something he has a strong emotional connection to; of course, you would think the Dickens book would qualify if that were the case...perhaps it does have to be a person. _________________ "I dust a bit...in addition, I am at the moment writing a lengthy indictment against our century. I agree, the only problem I had with the episode (forgive my blaspheme) is that Daniel's attitude was, 'well yeah I guess a person would work'. You would think that someone you had a strong emotional connection to would be the best constant you could have. Also, the rat dying because she didn't have an anchor in both time frames? Daniel sent it into the future what, an hour? It was probably in the same room/cage/maze it's entire life.
Anyway, the great thing about Desmond's book is the note he found when he was going to end it all:
Dearest Des, I am writing this letter to you as you leave for prison. And I've hidden in the one place you would turn to in a moment of great desperation. I know you go away with the weight of what happened on your shoulders. And I know the only person who can ever take it off is you. Please don't give up, Des. Because all we really need to survive is one person who truly loves us. And you have her. I will wait for you. Always. I love you, Pen
When Desmond contacts Penny from the freighter, she says she knows about the experiments. She must have learned this information between his visit in 1996 and before he went to prison. _________________ Joopİ |
