On initial viewing I thought Jin was still alive and maybe it was a fake
death to spare him from Mr Paiks wrath.Plus, the date on the
gravestone makes no sense.

But Sun and Hurley are not acting like he's still alive - Sun espicially.
She's obviously very very emotional.

So...what do you guys think. Is he alive or dead ?

aarrrggg...Yes...I think Jin is dead.  His comment to Sun: ~"...you won't ever lose me..."  means he's dead.  (jg:  sniffle, single tear...) Crying or Very sad

Whereas, he wasn't my favorite character...he was Sayid lite for me.  He is the archetype of the good man forced to do bad things.  That made him interesting.  If their were a chance of him being alive Sun wouldn't be so chocked up at the grave site.  His death was Sept 22, 2004 so he was one of the non-survivors.  Alas, I will disinvest in him.  Therefore, I hope is killed soon.  I hope it is heroic...I like heroes.

I like:  Good man forced to do bad things archetype.  Sayid is my favorite because of this.  My other favorite character is Ben since I get the same vibe from him... although he has been so damaged by his circumstances he has gone somewhat "Off the Tracks"...I digress...my apologies.

My head says yes, my heart says no.

Either way he's trapped on the island and did something heroic (or really bad) to get Sun off.

I don't think they would get split up unless it was last chopper out and only one could fit on.Maybe Jin gets left behind accidently ?

So far we have two people missing preseumed dead who we can think of no good reason for them staying. Claire and Jin.

I'm starting to suspect that initially the O6 think the rest are all dead but over time they come to realise they are not. This leads Jack to go bonkers and Hurely to go back to Santa Rosa. Not sure why Kate is apparently unaffected. Sun and Sayids flashbacks could be pre-discovery.

I hope he's alive, but I doubt it.  I like my fantasy:  the Good Guys win...or they die heroically.
Sigh...

Well, so clearly the date of his death is saying he died in the crash. Which is odd, seeing as however he did die (be it on or off the island) Sun has gone along with whomever has covered up the real cause of his death.

Why pretend he didn't survive if he you are allowing 6 people to seem to have lived through it?

Ok, I'm having a real problem with all this.

Why the hell is Jack SO upset in Through The Looking Glass' ?
Jins dead, Claire maybe is dead.So is Jack upset because Locke and
Sawyer are left on the island ? I can't see it - he doesn't really like
either of them.
Is he upset cos Juliet is still on island ? or Rose and Bernard.

Do you see where I'm going with this ?

I don't think the show has provided information that ANY of the survivors not of the O6 are dead!  Wasn't the term "cover story" thrown around at some point?  If the O6 got off the island and had to lie about the fact that they're the only ones who survived, then why does everyone assume that everyone else is dead?  The way I've been reading it is that the Six got off the island somehow, made a deal they wouldn't tell the world about it, say that everyone else on the plane died (perhaps the two of the eight that died was for verisimilitude's sake), and forget about the island.  Kate is willing to live with this - we know she's not the most moral person.  Sayid is tough and can put it behind him.  Jack and Hurley cracked as a result of keeping up the lie.  Sun either A. was told Jin is dead to help her keep up appearances or B. had the grave stone built for appearances.  She NEVER says he died in the flash forward.  She calls for him as though he's still alive (which, in a drug induced state can be written off) and says she misses him - could mean death, could just mean she misses him since he's on the island and she believes she'll never see him again.  I can't see otherwise why the writers would lead us to believe he died without showing us his death - they've never done that before, and what possibly narrative sense would it make?

Reposting from another topic:
I think theres no disputing the fact that Sun believes that Jin's dead... even if you think someone is trapped in some hard to reach corner of the space time   continuum you wouldn't be visiting a grave to "meet" them...

Plus.. This has to be the most .. er... "recent" flash forward ever right? not more just about six months from the "current" events!

So its possible that Jin is still alive but Sun (along with Jack and Hurley) will receive some indication in the future that some if not all survivors are alive...

The only thing that bugs me is that the people we have seen in the future are all involved some in cover up already (proof: the wrong date of death on Jin's tombstone)...

Would they place a tombstone if there was no body to bury?

Would Sun and Hurley have gone to a phoney gravesite if Jin were alive?

My interpretation was that they bring the body back and bury it. My guess would be that in the process of getting off the island, Jin dies on the boat so they bring him back.

We are mean to believe that Jin died in the plane crash (his date of death is 22nd Sept 2004).

Often the bodies of people killed in plane crashes (esp. at sea) are not recovered.

I don't think Jins body is in the grave.

I agree though why would Sun and Hurley go there, they could have gone to the beach or wherever. I think it's just a plot point.

For me the jury is still out on the case of Jin dead or alive ?
