I have always believed something and assumed others believe the same thing. Maybe thats not true but here it is.
The List. It is a list of names of people that need to be present at (or) for an event to occur. The list includes not only names of people from 815 but Others, freighter folk, and maybe some that haven't even appeared on the show yet. Ben is doing exactly what he needs to get these people there. This event is the purpose of the show.
I believe this like its fact. the rest is guesswork.
I would assume the event is one that both fixes the time issue with the island and at the same time is part of the reason why there is a time issue. |

Hmm... I've got to puzzle this one over for a bit... but it sounds like you could be on the tip of a big theory here.... _________________ "So we saved the world together for a while, and that was lovely." --Desmond |

My assumption, based upon Ben and Jacob's interactions, are that:
Ben gets full lists of all people so he can get background on them.
Ben then takes the full list to Jacob, and Jacob decides who is ok or not.
Then Ben manipulates what Jacob says to his own advantage, giving the rest of the Others his modified list.
I think this is why Jacob is reaching out to Locke and Hurley. |

As a general aside: What is it with lists anyway. I agree that they have an organizational use but ...geez ...Ben is always referencing a list.
To Goodwin/Ethan: "I want lists in three days."
"They were on the list."
Pickett: "Shepard wasn't even on the list.".
.
.
etc.
Is there some overarching significance to making/checking LISTS?
Can we make a list of all the lists? _________________ "Sensitivity?….WHO CARES"- jg |

Okay, prepare for THE FOREVER ANSWER THAT SOLVES IT ALL!
Lost's message is against excessive consumerism that hurts relationships, the environment, etc. Ben is "naturally" linked--he's an agent of nature and the natural way of doing this.
Why is he making lists, and checking them twice? Because he wants to see who's naughty or nice! BEN IS A REIMAGINATION OF SANTA CLAUS, one bent on taking us back to a more natural, less consumeristic state!
Such ends me blather! _________________ "So we saved the world together for a while, and that was lovely." --Desmond |

@ Matt,
I love your sardonic Ben = Santa!
Santa against consumerism...wow...never would have put that together! HaHa
But, seriously: Do you see anti-consumerism in this show? _________________ "Sensitivity?….WHO CARES"- jg |
