This is an abridged and modified version of a a post from another thread.
We keep it clean on the cast to avoid an explicit iTunes rating and also because people listen within earshot of kids. I don't think that is an issue in here. I've always been freer with my language on the LOSTcasts forum. I like to curse. It's what happens when a feeble mind expresses itself forcefully. Also, as an adult I feel it is my right.
Who's to say what words are ok? Is God Damn ok? How about Puta? Is f**ck any less offensive than fuck just because you leave out the U and C? One person's offensive language is another's everyday conversation. And if a kid happens to be in here, I'm sure it isn't the first time they've seen bad words on the web.
I would prefer we use our moderator powers to maintain a respectful discourse rather than worry about people using language some might find offensive. My only beef is with abusive attacks or general jerkiness which had become rampant in our forum. That's why the guys and I thank Jackeduplockedown for setting this site up. But, in my humble opinion, we should care more about the context of the words than the words themselves.
The example I used in another thread:
The writers are fucking with us = Cool in my book.
Fuck you, show me your tits = not cool in my book.
Long, graphic dissertations of what you would do with Kate and Juliet and a pair of handcuffs, also not cool (Ok. Cool, but save those for Penthouse Forum). However, I don't believe that punctuating your thoughts with a few, time honored swear words should be verboten.
What does the class think? Can we talk like adults and maybe let it slide when someone uses words we may not choose, so long as they are not used in the context of a personal attack or as part of some sick, twisted LOST fanboy fantasy? _________________ This message has been approved by Matt Jones. |

I completely agree, I'm not a big fan of forums with 1,000,000 rules about what you can and can't say.
I think it should just be down to each member to use their common sense and to just not go to far. |

also in agreement - its the intent or sentiment that causes offence, not the words themselves. so swear away! |

Whereas I'm not above using profanity in conversation, we need to be careful as this can be a slippery slope.
I can control my fingers much better than my mouth.
I feel that using profanity will fuel the fires of the trolls, which may give them "self licensure for vulgarity". _________________ "Sensitivity?….WHO CARES"- jg

I don't think adults should be telling each other what words to use. Sometimes, you just have to say something like "Locke is a fucking idiot". |

Some boards have the ability for the moderators to block certain words and replace them with something else. If the moderators (and this is their board) would like certain words not to be used, they can change them.
But I'm a geek and therefore I tend to use frak more often than not anyway. _________________ "I don't give a damn for a man who can only spell a word one way." - Mark Twain |

THERE WILL NOT BE ANY MANDATED CENSORSHIP ON THIS FORUM
THAT IS THE ONLY THING I'LL INSIST ON
However it someone abuses the privilege and starts to bother enough people, they will be banned or suspended.
Hopefully it never comes to that. _________________ Jackie |

I figured you were joking in the other thread, but I wanted to gage the fans feeling on the topic. After all, we're all about the fans.
I had a felling we could all use adult language while simultaneously behaving like adults. Just thought it would be a good idea to have that stated somewhere.
Again, thanks for hooking this up. We never would have gotten it off the ground. _________________ This message has been approved by Matt Jones. |

As a long time listener and poster, I enjoy good, quality banter. However, when there are flame wars, personal attacks, and disrespecting sexual comments I tend to get frustrated. One of the things I have always loved about Lostcasts is that it is higher brow than other juvenile corners of the web. It has always been seasoned with sarcasm and wit, but it was never hurtful. That being said, I believe we should have some form of moderating that includes warnings for comments and possible comment deletion. I also think that a ban is appropriate if a commenter refuses to play nice. I am not a fan of censorship. I just want this to be a community of thinkers instead of insulting and disrespectful trolls. |

Agreed. Let's keep it highbrow.

I dunno, Mr. Jones... the web traffic potential for the Lostcasts Official Naughty Fan Fiction Contest might have an up side....

Isn't insisting another form of mandating... and thus aren't you mandating against mandataing against things? For shame, sir!
Matt Jones, keep up the great work, and Jackedup, thanks again for the boards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! _________________ "So we saved the world together for a while, and that was lovely." --Desmond |
