While exploring iTunes podcasts, I discovered a couple of categories of old radio shows that I have really enjoyed. The characterizations and stories are frequently corny, I enjoy them anyway. Its a chance to let my imagination do it's job. I think radio and Sci-Fi are made for each other, as each requires the imagination of the audience.
Like I said, many of these are bromidic, but there are several stories that are timeless. There are also stories by authors such as Heinlein, Serling, Asimov, & Clarke. (There are probably more...I have not found any PKD stories yet.)
Favorites:
Old Time Radio Sci-Fi
There are many stories here. There are many different formats, written by many different people and with varied quality. I have liked Dimension X, X Minus One, Mindwebs stuff...I am currently hooked on Journey Into Space-"The Red Planet Mars" (this is corny, but I've bought into the characters)
I didn't like Space Patrol or Vanishing Point.
X Minus One
This is my favorite. I've listened to them all. I actually discovered these old Sci-Fi radio shows in 10th grade (~1973). KAAY AM radio out of Little Rock Arkansas (I grew up in Minnesota) had these on occasionally (probably Sunday nights), and they were an 'album format' station that played real rock and roll (i.e. Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Billy Thorpe, Free, Hendrix...). Cutting edge I thought.
Darker projects: The Byron Chronicles
A modern audio show. It's production definitely has amateur /rookie components, but in many ways the production is more engaging than the old programs. I am hooked now, but in reading the reviews, their progams seem never to finish the story line. _________________ "Sensitivity?….WHO CARES"- jg |
