I love Michael Emerson, the depth he gives Ben's character is amazing. Now he is a straight up bad ass.

Smoke monster returns: loved it's grand entrance, rumbling like a freight train.

Anyone know the piece Ben was playing on the piano? Betcha the answer informs his character or the story somehow.

I always keep my spare shotgun in the piano bench too!

There is some great storytelling to come focusing on Linus & Widmore.

Gun's empty Sayid, gun's empty. I wonder how much of what Ben told Sayid was true and how much of it was simply made up as part of his manipulation/recruitment of Sayid?

Kate was perfect in this episode: pretty smiles, a little skin and nearly no dialogue!

The lighting during the standoff scene between Locke and Sawyer: great reflections of the flames coming off their torches. Not sure why I noticed, the production on this show is consistently top notch, this was but one example.

Fast paced, action packed...a fun episode of Lost, not overly complex.

I really couldn't of asked for a better episode of LOST. Alot of action, death and more mysterious time travel im definitely putting this at 2nd place, just underneah The Constant. In some ways it actuallly beats the Desmond centric episode but overall just not quite. Thanks for bringing such a strong rturn to season 4.

Can't bieleve Alex got killed off.  I didn;t see this coming and hse was quickly becoming one of my favorite charactors.

Smokey to the rescue was all kinds of bad ass.

"the doctor is fine" is wierd.

I thought for sure Claire was dead

I am so glad this show is back.  But the 10 time slot is killing me.  I am exhuasted.  But ifit gets less clothes on Kate i am Ok with that

I hear ya!  I'm jealous of those in the Central Time Zone, getting the episode at 9pm.

Don't forget: if you have digital cable, the episodes are available for free Friday mornings... this is true for Comcast but I'm assuming all providers.  They even have HD eps for free!!!!!

This episode was AWESOME!!! Check out the episode's rating at Dark UFO

Highlights from the episode ...

- "The Rules have Changed!" - What were the rules originally? ... "The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club ... The second rule of Fight Club is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!!! ..."

- "Ben's vomiting in the desert" - What a great nod to time-travelling, Terminator-style (sans the nakedness) ... I think this is a "rotten easter egg", as I am not convinced that Ben teleported himself into the middle of the Sahara Desert from the Island ... I will discuss this topic further (in one of the other threads that is specifically discussing this issue).

- "Ben recruits Sayid" - It's just like Palpatine corrupting Anakin, and thus Anakin became Darth Vador ... I can totally see a scenario (in a future ep), where Ben sends Sayid to kill Penelope, but in actuality, Sayid is Ben's pawn to get Desmond out of the way, clearing Ben's path to Penny.

- "What is the date of Ben's Flash-forward?" - It is 10/21/2005, according to Lostpedia, but Doc Jensen states that the date is 10/25/2005 ... So who is right?

- "3 Redshirt Deaths ..." - AWESOME! What were their names? Crewman Number 6? ... Wink

- "Alex's Murder" - That was hardcore!!! One of the benefits of the show being on at 10pm.

- "Widmore & Ben" - Keeping with the Star Wars' analogy, Ben must have been Widmore's padawan a long, long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away)

- "Jack's illness" - I think I stated this in another thread, but I gotta believe this is the device TPTB will use to get Jack off the Island ... I knew that he would never leave the Island willingly without the rest of the Losties.

Excellent Episode of course

Thought Ben's drawing the Gun from under the Piano was a little over the top as well as his Jackie Chan like escape ability in the Sahara but nonetheless fn to watch.

The smoke monster incident was the most interesting to me.
Does the fact that there are "controls" in Ben's house suggest that someone has always had control of the smoke? Even in Dharma days?

Of course the major point of the episode was to enlightened us as to the dynamic of Widmore vs. Ben and it seems most likely that Widmore was Ben's original money man. And likely responsible for the purge.

So Widmore wants "his" Island back, Ben has always felt the need to protect it but now he also wants vengeance and because Ben is insane he has to enact it in elaborate and grand fashion. And of course must first tell his nemesis of his plans. After all as Babe Ruth, Ali, Joe Namath and Larry Bird all taught us the best ones call their shots.

It should also be noted Ben's plans will probably make it awkward for he and Desmond at their reunion.

Hope the writers don't return to the well on for the "is Claire dead card" that one's to obvious I think.

Emerson has been strong and consistent as Ben and is reallt the "star" of the show now in my opinion. The best part is we still don't know if he's the good guy or the bad guy.

Sayid's story was predictable, only because it was well foreshadowed, but I still like the idea of him as Ben's assassin

Sawyer is a much tougher target then an extra and bullets can't penetrate Dharma picnic tables.

I'm not sure what Ben meant (if anything) by "he changed the rules"

At first I thought maybe he and Widmore were playing a game and maybe to some extent they are. The both use people as evidenced by thier back stories.

More likely it just means that Ben never thought Widmore would harm him or his daughter.

IWhen Alex was killed, t seemed like that was the first time all show ben was surprised by something.

So Ben can teleport and\or travel through time. This is clearly an island thing right?

Next thursday can't get here soon enough

I am thinking that "controlling" Smokey is more analogous to "Letting a wild animal out of it's cage" ... No one really controls Smokey, they only know how to release it & how dangerous/lethal a weapon it is. If Ben/DHARMA had total control over Smokey, then why the need for the Sonic Fence of Death ... Now how do you capture/contain Smokey, once one lets it out of its cage?

I must respectfully disagree with Jackie on this point ... I think Widmore was the Island's Avatar prior to Ben. Once Ben became the new Avatar, I'm thinking Widmore (and any Island natives loyal to him -- Abaddon, Ms. Hawking, Brother Campbell?!?) was exiled off-Island. In this scenario, Widmore would be neither Ben's money man, nor responsible for the Purge ... Don't know where Ben's money comes from, but I think that the Purge was Ben's first act of devotion to the Island as its Avatar.

So true Jackie!!!

Totally agree!!!

I gotta believe there will be some AHHHHAA Moment in some future episode that will explain how Ben, Michael, & Mr. Friendly all travelled safely off the Island.

Judging by what we've seen in the promos for the nxt episode, keemy and some of his men are still alive... therefore, im thinking maybe smokey just lasts for a limited time when released then vanishes?  Surely they'd all of been dead by the hands of smokey if not?

Anyways i agree with everyone on what was really great from that episode, i would also like to add that i thought the humour at the start of the episode when locke, sawyer and hurley were playing risk and hurleys like " dude, he's trying to turn us against each other" was funny , as well as meaningful.. look what happened at the end of the episode.. ben succeeded in sawyer claire miles and aaron disembarking from the group and going back to the main camp so he can focus manipulating locke further.
