How's this sound: Widmore makes reference to having started drinking "when the nightmares started."  Let's assume that he's been to the island (which he calls "once my island); further, let's assume for my purposes that his nightmares are connected to the island.

Now a bit of a jump: Walt is particularly perceptive--what if his off-island experience is also filled with nightmares (perhaps these nightmares start in 2004 when he leaves the island, or later towards the "bearded Jack" point in time).  Whatever the source of these nightmares (the island punishing the bad, calling for help, etc), Walt is so burdened that he takes his own life.  As many might recall, Darlton has said that the newspaper clipping will be rewritten ala the first Des & Pen picture; so whatever we assume from the screencap of the clipping is potentially wrong.

Third, mix in that Michael isn't around--it would be very fulfilling for many, I think, to see the character die some awful death for his crimes (Nothing against Mr. Perrineau, though... good to have the old boy back!).  Also, for the sake of my denoument, let's assuming Walt's grandmother is dead or just not a huge presence in his life.

This, I claim this: Walt, alone in the world, burdened by the island, frightened by nightmares... takes his own life.  Being "anonymous" (ie living under a fake name), no family or friends know that he is dead.  No father is alive to attend the funeral.  Jack, somehow, makes the connection--or, as suggested by John Kheeler in a podcast, needs "the person" in the coffin to get back to the island--and with Walt dead, he is saddened.

The nightmares plague Walt into the coffin.  Thoughts?

PS Now that I'm in love with this idea, my brain has reminded me that "the orphan boy" character who became Walt was in the very first draft of the Abrams/Lindelof (Lieber?) script.  (If you don't get the Lieber reference, go here .)  Was he an interesting character... or an integral part of the island mythology?  We shall see....
