They are each others constant. The two master time manipulators only have each other as a reference point. Discuss . . .

I like the idea of them being each others' constant.
but I think that the whole "constant" issue is incomplete yet.
I have a feeling that soon enough, we will discover that someone's constant cannot be ON the island at the same time as him.

Therefore, Ben and Charles cannot be on the island at the same time, or else...

This would make sense. Otherwise, Charles could've come to the island himself with the freighter. Also, this could be why he wants to get Ben OUT of the island (+alive).... so he can come back and not die coz his constant would still be alive.

Maybe ben kicked him out back in the days (before they were each others' constant). and he wants to come back to reclaim the island.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but Daniel and Des were on the island together. Des is Daniels constant.

My theory which I have had for quite some time that Dharma was once this happy hippie community that was run by a rich philanthropist (Hanso) who was really looking to save the world but ran low on money so turned to a big corporation (Widmore) and it was that corporation that changed Dharma into the thing Ben disliked enough to kill everyone and take the island back. Hence Ben took the island off Widmore though strictly speaking the island didn't belong to Widmore he just 'bought' it off Hanso who in a way stole it off the hostiles.

I really like this theory, one I heard earlier today on a podcast, also.  I'm glad to see a discussion thread for it here.
I don't think that being around your constant or not is the issue, as long as one can make contact through some means; however, I'm not sure that the contact has to be on-going.  Once should be enough.  Ben and Widmore don't have to keep getting in touch, do they?  Regular meetings at, say, Hyde Park, just to keep each other from going batty?
Thinking about "TSoTtC," it does not seem that Ben made a beeline to see Widmore, so it does not appear this contact needs to happen each time he leaves.  Ben says that, "Iraq is lovely this time of year," and many assume that means the FF we saw were sequential and subsequent to each other, at least reasonably subsequent.  Taking care of the stuff with Sayid took at least a few days, so he would have been pretty far out of the time-frame in which we've seen most people need a constant.  I grant you that Ben might be of sturdier stock, but  that means he would need to be checking in with Widmore every time he left the island, and based on the stock of passports in his secret room, I imagine this is a relatively regular occurance.
I think there is an inter-dependence between the two men, constants to each other or not, and Widmore violated the rules of engagement.  Ben seems to regret not being able to kill him, and I believe it is because without Widmore, Ben will lose something, perhaps his grip on time, and perhaps his connection with the island.

I really like this idea ... The theory that there will be some serious repercussion to Ben if Widmore dies. It adds another layer to the mystery above & beyond a simple moral/social code of the Others.

Quote:
WIDMORE: I know who you are, boy. What you are. I know that everything you have you took from me. So... Once again I ask you: Why are you here?

This line by Widmore leads me to believe that Widmore, Ben, and the Island are inextricably connected ...
