Ben seems surprised to find the cut in his arm when he materializes in Tunisia, which leads me to believe it wasn't just a result of something that happened to him before his teleportation.
In Michael Crichton's book "Timeline", a number of subjects, having travelled in a time machine, find random injuries like this: Basically, the calibration's not perfect and sometimes your arm for instance may teleport to just a millimeter out of alignment from the rest of you. It looks like a cut, but it's really more that you haven't been put back together again properly.
It's probably a long shot, and it doesn't mean much either way, but I thought it may be worth mentioning. The creators have mentioned Crichton once or twice over the years.

The cut on Ben's arm looks suspiciously like the cut on Marvin Candle/Mark Wickmund/Edgar Halliwax's arm -- even though Marvin/Mark/Edgar lost his arm -- and, of course, Ben is wearing his Orchid Station jacked when he materializes in Tunisia.
