I just re-watched the episode again -- it's definitely a favorite.

#1) The doctor's body was thrown overboard right before they all took off in the helicopter. The body washed up on the island WELL before the helicopter flew over, though. Continuity error? Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that the body didn't follow the bearing.

#2) I loved the "I'm not a scientist" line when Locke was talking with one of his teachers. That's definitely been a theme for a long time.

#3) Did anyone notice that the guy in Locke's drawing of the smoke monster only had four fingers (on one hand)? I'm not sure if that was intentional or not.

#4) I think the comments some folks have made about Ben and Locke having the same mother are interesting.  Both mothers felt very strongly about what name the kids would have... Related to that, why John? Is that a clue about the father's identity?

#5) I can understand adoptive parents keeping the "John" but why would they keep the kid's original last name?

#6) Why did Christian tell Locke not to tell anyone he's seen Claire?

#7) Who was Kate talking to about doing something for Sawyer? I wonder if it was one of the other O6--nobody else would know him.

#Cool There was a picture of a man--appeared to be a historical figure--above Locke's Geronimo Jackson poster in his locker. Did anybody catch who that was?

WOW! Great catch on young Locke's drawing ...

I took this pic from DocArzt's website ...

Notice that the person only has 4 fingers on his right hand ... His left hand has the normal 5 fingers.

Also, according to DarkUFO, the pic above the Geronimo Jackson poster in the locker is Sir Richard Burton ...

I think that the doctor's body wash-up and death have to indicate that the bearing to and from the island affects your arrival time on the island or your arrival time to where ever you are departing to.

The implication then is that people from the future can show up on the island at the same time that people from the past can show up, following different bearings.

I think this clue is too obvious to ignore.
............................................................................

Sir Richard Burton would appeal to any romantic high school kid. He was an adventurer and a man's man. He also seems to have a scar on his cheek, be it left cheek however. I'm going to look further into this connection.

Interestingly John has never been one to accept his destiny. His self will has veered him from his Island Destiny. He lost faith in the Island and inserted his own will...losing favor with the Island...but now he is being called back...a wiser and more humble servant...??
