I just finished changing the seals in the rear axle housing because of what I consider a design flaw in the 250 recon. There are 2 seals in the rear, one to keep oil in the rear housing, and one to keep out any leakage into the brake drum. between these seals there is a "weeper" hole similar to what you would see on a water pump. if the oil leaks from the rear, supposedly, the oil will leak out of the weeper hole before it gets to the brake drum seal. Good idea, but this hole is under the skid plate, and if you are riding in mud and water, this hole can get plugged with mud, trapping water in between the seals, rusting the axle shaft, and causing the seals to fail. Then after you lose your brakes due to the oil in the shoes, you have to replace the shoes, seals, and if the axle shaft gets too rusty, replace that. I didn't have to replace the axle, but seals and shoes... needless to say, I sealed that hole!!!!! NOT NEEDED FOR ANYTHING ELSE DUE TO THE VENT THAT IS ALREADY THERE, HONDA!!!! |
