With respect to Peter’s comment about the role of silence I would have to certainly agree. There is a great deal of power that silence has the ability to carry with it. This quote that Peter used pretty much sums it all, "My father always said more with his silences, his pauses, and the movement of his fingers to his face than he did with his words. He communicated the mystery and uncertainty of life in a way that my mother never could" (62). Dalton’s mother had a great way with words, she was such an articulate woman and seemed to be able to manipulate any conversation. Dalton’s father on the other hand, with his gestures and silence, was able to convey true emotions. In the case of Dalton’s mother she was able to say one thing but really mean something else and in a sense play mind games but Dalton’s father’s silence set forth an unmistakable message.

In The Woman Warrior  we also saw his element of silence as power with Maxine’s aunt not revealing the name of the man who was the father of her child and taking all the blame upon herself. She was stronger than the man whose child she was to have because with her silence he was able to be free and she suffered all the consequences.
