Ace couldn't either.

Actually, they doctored the original photo to drop in Pete's eye from another shot. And it's not a fucked-up makeup job on his part-- his eyebrow is raised.
Not sure why they wanted him to have one eyebrow raised, but then again it looks way better like that than the saggy-faced, expressionless stoneface he had in the original photo.
My god, I think I just offered myself up as the biggest Kiss nerd on this forum.

I think the Destroyer cover artist, Ken Kelley, wasn't necessarily a fan and was sending a personal message with the way he painted Ace's hands.
Look at the left side, he's holding up 4 fingers, so "four".
Look at the right side, he giving the fairy or fag, limp wrist gesture.
Basically, Ken was saying KISS is "4 fags".

Which was sort of a common put down in those days...
if you were a guy and didn't care for something you would say something like "Awww, man. That band is for fags".
Like kids today call everything gay, i.e. "that band is so gay".

It's funny how "so gay" doesn't necessarily mean "uncool" anymore.
I've seen interviews with, say, Zakk Wylde, where he's saying he's grown his beard out of a bet with his bandmates to see who could make it look "gayer" (you know, treadlocks and shit). Then the rest of his band shaved it off and he kept it, "just for kicks". The interview was so funny that it made you realize he wasn't putting homosexuality down in any way. Not even as a punchline.
To me, mocking homosexuals has always been a matter of sexual insecurity.
Still, Ace looks fucking queer on the Destroyer cover!

I thought I read that the Dyansty cover was actually created by taking different bits and pieces from many photos taken of each member then put together. And it was some famous photographer, I think? |
