If the tables were turned & that Outer Space solo was Thayer's first "original", non-clone solo, you'd be all over it.

One sounds like someone trying really hard to sound like Ace, without having the syncopated timing or his melodic sense.
The other sounds like someone trying something new, and failing. Like they bellyflopped while trying to do a fancy forward flip into the pool.
I'll take #2.
